What is a NSW Class C license?
A class C license (C-class license) is a driver’s license issued in NSW Australia to those who have passed the appropriate driving test. The classification of the license depends on the type and mass of a vehicle that can be driven.
Class C is the most common class of driver’s license, and it is required to drive any vehicle which has more than two axles or weighs more than 2,500 kg. It also applies to towed vehicles where the trailer is not heavier than 3,500 kg for new drivers for up to 5 years. A motor vehicle with more than two axles cannot be used as a learner vehicle.
A Class C license allows you to drive a sedan, station wagon, four-wheel-drive vehicle (without trailers) and light trucks up to 4.5 tonne Gross Vehicle Mass (GVM).
You do not need a second class license to operate a vehicle with an automatic transmission. Automatic vehicles are not fitted with a clutch pedal, therefore the gear selector is usually a switch or button on the dashboard or steering column and may have a position for park (P), reverse (R), neutral (N), drive (D) or low gear (L).
Class C vehicle types:
Sedan - this is also known as a passenger car and carries from 1-8 people including the driver.
Station wagon - this is also known as an estate car, estate or wagon and carries from 1-8 people including the driver.
Light truck - this type of truck has 4 wheels and has either 2 axles or 2 axles and an axle at the back of the trailer. It carries 1-8 people including driver. The maximum weight limit of this truck is 4500kg gross vehicle mass (GVM).
Understand the basic concepts of class C license
A Class C license is issued to a driver who operates a vehicle designed to carry 16 or more passengers including the driver or transports hazardous materials that require placarding. A commercial driver’s license (CDL) is required for anyone operating a Class C vehicle. Driving Test NSW consists of a written test and a driving test.
A CDL holder may operate any vehicle within Classes D and E with restrictions, unless the CDL holder has an air brake restriction on his/her CDL. Class D includes all vehicles under Class C and GVWR greater than 26,000 lbs. Class E includes all vehicles under Class D and GVWR greater than 10,000 lbs., but not more than 26,000 lbs.
B: Commercial Motor Vehicle Operator License (CMV) For drivers of commercial motor vehicles, the following regulations are in effect for a CDL holder operating any vehicle within Classes D and E.
For a CMV holder operating a truck, trailer, or semi-trailer weighing less than 26,000 lbs., no additional training is required to obtain a CDL.
What does a class C license cover?

Towing a trailer with a GVM of less than 9 tonnes (GVM must be no more than the gross weight of the vehicle).

How can a person get a class C license?
In order to get a class C license you need to be at least 18 years old and apply for this license in the state where you live. The process varies according to the state.
Getting a class C license is different from getting a driver’s permit, as most people have to first get a learner’s permit and then practice driving for a certain period of time before you can take your driving test. For example, in New South Wales, if you are 18 years or older, you can apply for a learner’s permit immediately. However, if you are under 18 years of age, you must first complete the Driver Knowledge Test (DKT).
Here are the steps to follow:
You will have to visit your local motor registry center and fill out an application form for a learner’s permit. You will also have to pay the required fee (it varies according to the state), provide your identity information and pass an eyesight test.
After paying the required fee, passing the eyesight test and submitting your identity information, you will receive your learner’s permit. Your next step will be to complete 100 hours of supervised driving that must include 10 hours of night driving experience.
Once all these steps are completed, you can schedule an appointment
