The learner can drive on any road with an L sign and must display an L sign on the rear of their vehicle. The L sign is different to the P plates that they used to display as a learner. It’s a red triangle with an L in the middle and it should be displayed on the back window on both sides of your vehicle.
The driver must not use a mobile phone while driving, including hands-free devices, unless it’s an emergency situation.
Learners are not allowed to drive between midnight and 5 am unless accompanied by someone who holds a full license for at least three years and who is 21 years or older - this applies even if they’re driving to school or work during this period!
What are the rules for provisional and open license holders?
Provisional riders must display L-plates at all times. They can only ride on a road or road-related area with a zero blood alcohol concentration (zero BAC). They must complete the Q-Ride program before they take their final test to gain an open license and are not allowed to carry passengers on a learner or open license.
Open riders can carry passengers, but only if they have completed their Q-Ride training, which is compulsory for riders who want to carry a pillion passengers.
