What Is An Alberta Class 5 License?
Class 5 License is a license that allows you to drive private passenger vehicles and trucks under 4,500kg, with or without trailer. This is the most common license held by Albertans.
To obtain your Class 5 license, you need to pass a knowledge test on basic driving rules, road signs and traffic signals. You will also be required to pay the applicable fees, submit two recent passport-sized photographs of yourself, and provide proof of residency in Alberta.
How many types of Class 5 Driving license in Alberta?
There are two types of class 5 licenses in Alberta:
Class 5 GDL
If you’re 18 or older and are getting a driver’s license for the first time, you’ll need to get a Class 5 GDL license. If you currently have a valid license from another province or country, you can exchange it for an Alberta driver’s license without writing any tests.
How to get Alberta Class 5 GDL
To get this license, you must pass a road test and meet certain requirements.
You may want to get your Class 5 GDL license if:
You’re new to Alberta and want to make sure you can legally drive while preparing for your road test
You’ve had your learner’s permit for at least one year and need more practice before taking your road test
Class 5 GDL licenses have some restrictions. For example, you must:
Prove that you’ve held your learner’s permit for at least one year (after passing your knowledge test)
Have a zero blood alcohol content (BAC). When you drive.
Class 5 Non-GDL
If you’re 16 or 17 years old, you’ll need a Class 7 learner’s license before you can get your Class 5 GDL license. The Class 7 allows you to drive under the supervision of someone who has held their full (non-GDL) class 5 driver’s license for at least 2 years.
If you’re 25 or older and have had a full (non-GDL) class 5 license for at least 2 years, you can get your full class 5 license without having to go through the graduated licensing program.
How to get Alberta Class 5 non-GDL (Probationary)
This is probationary license. Drivers under 16 need a parent or guardian to accompany them when they drive. Drivers who are 16 and older can drive alone if accompanied by a fully licensed driver. A probationary license doesn’t allow a person to drive alone. A driver needs to pass a road test to get a full license.

Taking practice tests means more than just getting used to the format of the actual ICBC knowledge test practice. It’s also about developing your skills, learning about your strengths and weaknesses and practicing under timed conditions. The key is to learn from your mistakes so you won’t make them again on test day.
Practice test is important because it gives you a chance to see where your strengths and weaknesses lie. If you’re struggling to solve math problems within a certain range, you can go back and review those topics in greater detail. If you have trouble finishing reading passages within the time limit, you can start focusing on reading faster without losing comprehension. These are both valuable skills to have in college, so it’s worth investing time on improving them even if it means lowering your score at first.
