This is a transcript of a speech given by a year 6 student who is trying to persuade their classmates that governments should not be spending money on space exploration.
Thank you, everybody, for taking the time to listen to me today. I have gathered you here to talk to you about space; more specifically, about the amount of money that the UK government is spending on space exploration.
5 I'm as interested in space as anyone. I sometimes wonder if there is life on other planets, what it would be like to walk on the moon, or whether space really is infinite. When I went camping in the summer, I enjoyed stargazing in the evening and spotting constellations. However, my interest in space doesn't cost any money, apart from the occasional book
10 or trip to a planetarium. Yet the government seems to think that millions of pounds of public money should be spent on events happening thousands of miles from the planet we live on.
15 The UK is a member of the European Space Agency (ESA), an organisation of 22 countries who work together to find out more about space. In 2021, the ESA invited people to apply to be their new astronauts, with 166 people from the UK chosen to go through the second round of the application process. This made the UK the country with the third highest number of applicants selected, behind France and Germany. The Head of Space Exploration at the UK Space Agency said
20 that it was 'exciting to see so many UK candidates making it through to the next phase.' Exciting?
Expensive, more like.
25 It takes a lot of money to send someone into space. The UK spends around £400 million a year on space exploration. That is a lot of money. Is finding out whether aliens exist, or whether the moon is made of cheese, really worth £400 million?
30 There is a saying : 'money doesn't grow on trees'. Believe me, I wish it did, but sadly this is the stuff of fiction. In the real world, people work hard for money, and we have to decide carefully what we spend it on. That's as true for governments as it is for individuals.
35 What should the government be spending its money on? Well, I don't think that any of you would dispute that the education and public health sectors need A LOT more funding. Governments should surely be more focused on ensuring that the public have food to eat and a roof over our heads. We should also put money into saving our environment, and trying to put a stop to climate change. There is so much to pay for on our own planet, so why are governments spending so much money finding out about others?
40 I can't deny that space is interesting and intriguing. I'd love to know more about it. I'd also like to buy a private jet and go on lots of expensive holidays but I know that I can't spend money I don't have. Governments may want to send astronauts into space but there are much more pressing and expensive concerns here on Earth. Let's spend our hard- earned money caring for our planet and the people on it rather than on
45 trying to find out whether there's life in galaxies far, far away.
